DeAtley Residence

Clarkston, Washington

The key influencing factor in the design of the DeAtley home was the close proximity of Snake River. The steeply sloped site created a design challenge in itself. We worked hard to nestle the three story residence and driveway into the hillside adjacent the river. The linear layout of the home takes full advantage of the river view from most rooms on all floors.

The site was ideally oriented to maximize the day lighting in the home without exposing the interiors to the harsh southern and western sun that can bake the valley in summer months. The afternoon and evening summer sun is largely blocked with minimal window exposure.

The owners wanted the exterior character of the home to reflect the sculptural qualities of the architecture of the southwest. The focal point of the home is the slate faced, sweeping three story stairwell that captures the north and east natural light, funneling it into the core of the home. Open concrete stair treads provide transparency. From the main living area the owners can look through the stair and out to the river to the northeast. The main living area, kitchen and master suite all open directly onto the river below.

The clean, sculptural lines that dictate the exterior design of the home carry through to the interior. Contemporary detailing is carried through to cabinetry design, furniture, light fixtures and hardware. The collective result is an inspiring home that is truly a unique adventure for all those who experience it first hand.
